PROJECT OVERVIEW

Since a child I have always loved folding wrapper for sweets and chocolates, turning shiny foils that are normally chucked away into tiny birds, flowers and other animals. In this project I got to do something similar, but this time I was actually folding the food! Yep, edible Origami!

Edible Origami Grasshopper and Locusts for Knorr Social Media Campaign

The "Dare to Try" campaign worked with various creators on TikTok and other platforms to promote tasty and sustainable ways of eating, emphasising that dishes can be delicious while also including little explored ingredients that represent more sustainable food choices - for this case, insects!

In the campaign, 11 content creators came together to play a game of Truth of Dare, where Knorr shared the truth about the effects of food production and consumption on our ecosystems, including how the food system is responsible for more than a third of all greenhouse gas emissions.

But why edible insects!?

The Global Masterbrand director at Knorr, Niek de Rooij explained that "we are not asking people to start eating insects from now on, but we would like to invite them to think about the impact their plate can have on the planet. And there are plenty of better options such as the simple and delicious recipes we created with our chefs. We hope these dishes will inspire people to discover new, fun ways of cooking with vegetables and plants.”

As part of this project as an invitation and teaser before the influencers went out to the Mexican jungle to encounter a series of short form and high impact challenges.

And how did you make it with Origami?!

It took a fair bit of experimentation, as well as of course a qualification in food handling safety, before I was able to work successfully with edible ink and rice paper to create these original and bespoke edible origami bugs.
Each of them were hand folded with a few tricks of the trade to make sure they were delivered neat and super presentable to the influencers - it was then just their job to rip off those heads and get muching and filming!
